My old "Safety Issues" columns Posted: 29 May 06 2:51 AM (N/A) |

Hey everybody!
I was going through some things on my computer and I found all of my old "Safety Issues" columns that I used to write for the Sand Springs club. I thought it could give you an idea of the type of person I am since I haven't met anyone from the Sapulpa club yet and how seriously I took the responsibility of being the Risk Management Coordinator for that club. Have a look and let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance.

Finally, Spring is upon us. I wanted to just touch on a few concerns I have about keeping our kids as safe as possible...more
1)
Last Thursday, while leaving practice, I saw 4 kids up in the trees by
the concession stand. This is entirely unacceptable. The absolute last
thing we need is for a child to fall out of one of those trees and
break something. If you see a child up in a tree out at the fields,
please ask them to get down.
2) The Bridge. We haven't even had our first games this season and
there have been kids climbing down past the railing, wading in that
filthy water and actually going through the pipe UNDER the bridge. Once
again, entirely unacceptable. Unless a ball has gone down there and
someone is going after it, there is NO REASON that anyone should be
down there. If you see any kids playing down in/beside/under the
bridge, please ask them to get out of there. There are numerous hazards
down there and once again, the last thing we need is for a kid to slip
on a slime-covered rock and break someting.
3) COACHES: Remember to have water/Gatorade/Propel on hand for the kids
that forgot theirs. A good rule of thumb is for every 20 minutes of
practice, your players need at least 4 oz. of water/Gatorade/other. If
one of your players says that they are thirsty, that's too late. Keep
their muscles hydrated! Also, it would be a great idea to have a first
aid kit on hand in case one of your players gets hurt.
4) At practices and games, if you brought some disposable container out
to the fields (QT cup, McDonalds, Coke, etc) and you've finished or
emptied it, please find a trash can. We have a bunch all over our
complex. Also, if you see trash in or around your fields, it wouldn't
hurt to pick it up and throw it away. Let's keep our fields looking
good.
That's it for this installment. Once again, I hope you all have a fun and safe season. Take care.

I found the first column I posted as Risk Management Coordinator for the SSSC. The information could be used for any club out there. If no one minds, I could post them here for parents, players, and coaches to look over. Thanks in advance.
The Fall season is upon us, with registration taking place and team
formation to follow soon after. There are a few of things we need to
concern ourselves with, proper hydration, proper stretching and field
safety.
Proper hydration:
With the weather as it is now, you need to make sure your body is getting enough liquid to work properly. A
good baseline is for every 20 minutes of strenuous exercise, you need 4
oz. of water, Gatorade or other. My personal choice is Gatorade Propel
(It has been shown that Gatorade Propel is 40% more effective than
water at replacing electrolytes, curbing lactic acid build-up and
hydrating your muscles).
Proper stretching:
Stretching prevents injury, plain and simple. Make sure that you or
your players allow about 10 minutes before training or practice to
stretch. Work on the large muscle groups and the muscles responsible
for core strength. Some people have gone so far as to incorporate yoga
or pilates into their training regimen; incorporating something like that would be fantastic!
Field safety:
Before you start training out at the fields, just take a walk around
and make sure that there are no hazards in or around your field; the
very last thing we need is for a child to fall on a piece of rebar or
step in a gopher hole and twist his ankle. Also, keep your fields clean
and the trash picked up. It keeps things safer for everyone and it
presents a better image of our Club as a whole. We have numerous trash
cans around the fields; let's use them!
That's it for the first column concerning safety for our Club. If you
have any comments or suggestions, feel free to contact me.
Let's all have a great season. Remember, safety first!
